About WC3Map
An independent community archive dedicated to cataloging and preserving Warcraft III custom maps and game metadata.
Project Mission & Purpose
WC3Map is an independent archive for custom game scenarios created for Warcraft III. Spanning decades of community creation, custom maps include genres such as Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas (MOBA), Tower Defense (TD), Auto-Battlers, and Hero Defense.
We maintain a directory of classic engine releases (Patches 1.24e, 1.26a, and 1.27a) and modern editions (Patch 1.32+ Reforged and 3.0 Definitive Edition), providing metadata, minimap previews, engine compatibility labels, and direct downloads.
Archive Scale & Scope
Our database tracks custom game maps across distinct map lines and individual version releases. The figures below reflect current records derived directly from our catalog database:
Where Our Data Comes From
Metadata displayed on WC3Map is gathered from two primary technical sources:
- Public Catalog Ledger: Baseline listing information, multiplayer lobby hosting counts, first and last seen timestamps, and version relationships originate from public community records documented on wc3maps.com.
- Binary Map File Extraction: For archived map binaries, our ingestion tools parse the internal MPQ archive files directly. We inspect the map information block (
war3map.w3i) for titles, author strings, player slot suggestions, and tilesets; inspect script files (war3map.jandwar3map.lua) for scripting engines and chat commands; and extract embedded terrain minimaps (war3mapMap.blp) to render previews.
Unmodified File Preservation
All map binaries (.w3x and .w3m) are served byte-for-byte as received from the archive:
- No Repackaging: We do not edit, repackage, or recompress map files.
- Download Filename Tag: Only the download filename delivered to your browser receives the
[wc3map.com]tag (e.g.,<map-name> [wc3map.com].w3x) via the HTTPContent-Dispositionheader. The file bytes stored in object storage remain byte-identical to the source.
Creator Attribution & Credits
Every custom map credits the author name recorded in the map file. If you are an author and notice inaccurate attribution on a map page, please reach out to us at contact@wc3map.com so we can correct the catalog.
