How to Install Warcraft 3 Custom Campaigns

Custom campaigns bundle multiple story chapters, custom cinematic interludes, voice lines, and persistent hero inventories into a single package file. Follow this walkthrough to install .w3n campaigns in both modern Reforged and legacy Frozen Throne game clients.

Custom Campaign File Extension (.w3n)

Unlike standalone custom maps that use .w3x or .w3m, complete storylines and campaign series are packaged as .w3n files. Placing a .w3n file into the regular Maps\Download directory will not work; the game client only looks for campaigns inside a dedicated Campaigns subfolder.

Copy downloaded .w3n files directly into your Windows user Documents folder:

C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents\Warcraft III\Campaigns\

Note: If the Campaigns directory does not exist, right-click inside Documents\Warcraft III and create a new folder named exactly Campaigns.

Legacy Classic Warcraft IIIPatch 1.26a / 1.27a

In classic standalone installations, campaigns reside in the game installation root:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Warcraft III\Campaigns\

If you installed the game on an alternate partition, navigate to D:\Warcraft III\Campaigns\.

How to Launch Custom Campaigns in Game

The method for accessing custom campaigns depends on your client version:

  1. Reforged (Patch 1.35 and newer): In the main menu, navigate to Single Player → Custom Campaigns. Select the installed campaign title from the list, select your preferred difficulty level (Story, Normal, or Hard), and press Play.
  2. Legacy Frozen Throne: On the main menu screen, click Single Player, select your profile, then click the Custom Campaigns button. Your installed .w3n campaigns will appear in the campaign selector.

Common Issues and Solutions

  • Campaign button is greyed out or missing in Reforged: Custom Campaign support was officially reintroduced in Patch 1.35. Ensure your Battle.net launcher has updated Warcraft III to the latest patch release.
  • Downloaded file is an archive (.zip or .rar): Many campaign creators package sound assets, portraits, and extra files together. Extract the archive using 7-Zip or WinRAR and place only the extracted .w3n file into the Campaigns folder.
  • Campaign shows up but crashes upon loading: Some classic campaigns developed for patch 1.26a utilize legacy custom DLLs or deprecated JASS script APIs that are incompatible with Reforged. Run older legacy campaigns inside a classic 1.26a installation.
