How to Play Warcraft 3 on LAN
Playing Warcraft III over a Local Area Network (LAN) provides near-zero latency, perfect synchronization, and offline accessibility for home networks and local play. Here is how to configure your local network and firewall for LAN matches.
1. Local Network Requirements
For computers to discover and join a LAN game, all devices must be connected to the same physical or wireless router subnet (for example, all machines with IP addresses starting with 192.168.1.x).
- All machines must run the exact same game patch version (for example, all players on 1.26a or all players on the same patch).
- All players must have the map file saved in their local custom maps directory, or download it from the host inside the lobby.
2. Windows Firewall & Port 6112 Configuration
Warcraft III communicates across local network firewalls using Port 6112 (TCP & UDP). If other computers on your home network cannot see the hosted lobby, Windows Defender Firewall is likely blocking incoming connection requests.
- Set Network Profile to Private: In Windows Network Settings, ensure your connection is set to Private Network. Windows blocks broadcast traffic on Public network profiles.
- Open Port 6112 on Firewall: Ensure port 6112 TCP and UDP are allowed through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Executable Permissions: In Windows Firewall settings, check that
Warcraft III.exeis permitted to accept incoming connections on Private networks.
3. Hosting and Joining a LAN Match
- The host clicks Local Area Network from the main menu and presses Create Game.
- Select the desired custom map from the scenario browser, choose speed and settings, and click Create.
- Other players on the same local subnet open Local Area Network; the hosted lobby will populate in their game list within seconds.
- Select the game name and click Join Game.
