Warcraft 3 W3X vs W3M
When downloading custom maps from archives like WC3Map or EpicWar, you will see files ending in .w3x, .w3m, and .w3n. Here is what each extension means, which game clients can run them, and how their internal architectures differ.
Format Comparison Overview
| Extension | Original Edition | Compatibility | Feature Support |
|---|---|---|---|
| .w3m | Reign of Chaos (RoC) | Playable in RoC, TFT, and Reforged | Base units and items; no custom abilities or TFT expansion heroes. |
| .w3x | The Frozen Throne (TFT) | Playable ONLY in TFT and Reforged | Custom abilities, buffs, upgrades, Tavern neutrals, Lua/JASS. |
| .w3n | Custom Campaign | TFT 1.20–1.31 & Reforged 1.35+ | Multi-map campaign bundles with persistent hero state and movies. |
What is a .W3M File?
.w3m is the original scenario extension for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, shipped in 2002. Because Reign of Chaos did not support custom abilities or expanded object editor modifications, .w3m maps use a simpler data structure.
A key benefit of .w3m scenarios is backward compatibility: they can be opened and hosted on any game client, including base Reign of Chaos, classic The Frozen Throne (1.26a), and modern Reforged.
What is a .W3X File?
.w3x was introduced in 2003 with The Frozen Throne expansion. It unlocked custom ability authoring, custom buffs, destructables, weather effects, sound environments, and neutral Tavern heroes (such as the Beastmaster and Dark Ranger).
Virtually all modern and classic custom games—including Defense of the Ancients (DotA), Legion TD, Green Circle TD, and Castle Fight—are distributed as .w3x files. They strictly require The Frozen Throne expansion or Warcraft III: Reforged.
Inside the File: MPQ Archives
Under the hood, both .w3x and .w3m files are compressed Blizzard MoPaQ (MPQ) archives. If you inspect a map with archive inspection tools (such as StormLib or MPQEditor), you will find internal component files:
war3map.w3i: Map header, author credit, dimensions, and player forces.war3map.jorwar3map.lua: Compiled map triggers and scripts.war3map.w3u&war3map.w3t: Custom unit and item definitions.war3mapMap.blp: 256×256 minimap terrain image.
