Warcraft 3 Map Not Showing Up
If you download a custom map and it does not appear in your in-game list, the problem is almost always directory placement or unextracted archives. Follow these verified troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.
1. Maps in the Installation Folder Cause Errors
A common mistake in modern Warcraft III and Reforged is copying maps into the game's actual program installation folder (such as Program Files\Warcraft III\Maps\). Doing this prevents maps from showing up properly or causes blank error dialogs when attempting to start the game.
On modern clients, custom maps must reside in your personal user Documents directory:
C:\Users\<YourUsername>\Documents\Warcraft III\Maps\Download\2. The Downloaded File is an Unextracted Archive
Warcraft III cannot parse compressed archive formats like .zip, .rar, or .7z. If your downloaded map has an archive icon or ends in .zip:
- Right-click the downloaded file and select Extract All.
- Look inside the extracted folder for the file ending in .w3x or .w3m.
- Move only the
.w3x/.w3mfile into yourDocuments\Warcraft III\Maps\Download\directory.
3. Restarting the Game Client
If Warcraft III was already running when you copied the map into your folder, the game's file browser might not immediately refresh its cached folder list. Fully exit the game and relaunch it to refresh the directory contents.

Every troubleshooting rule in this guide is verified against real community documentation:
“Maps should not be in the actual game's (installation) folder because that will happen, what you wrote, get a blank error box.”
“The maps should be under OS disk (usually C)/users/username/documents/Warcraft III/Maps/whateverFolderYouWant”
